The train ride passing through Roude Island - another first state for me Leaving the south station we were both amazed at how quiet and peaceful it was compared to the rush of NYC Along the Charles River Fenway Park Boston Commons Downtown and near the Boston Massacre Site Long Pier Transit Ferry from downtown to Hull Georges Island with Fort Warren Docking in the neighborhood of Hull Fort Revere Hewitts Cove for a ferry loop A great day trip idea. I would recommend the downtown ferry to hull then bus back to the city to make a loop I was back in Boston again for a few hours after the hike and walked through Harvard  From the library steps

June 2026 I did a 4 day section hike of the Appalachian Trail from Manchester City to Rutland. Access was through Albany then #7 bus to the East and ending with a long train ride back to Penn Station. I chose this part since it was mid June and wanted something reasonably high elevation to take advantage of the snow free season but also still had easy access from NYC. Hopefully next time I can make it to the higher White Mountains in New Hampshire. Thanks CH for the help with what to expect for this section.  There were a few options I considered to resupply if needed - hitch into Darby - hitch in Wallingford (tried at end of day and gave up after 30 minutes so make it to the next shelter before dark) - Take the Rutland airport bus into the city centre  - Buy food from the Throwing Stone Farm (this one worked great, small detour via rural roads)    Day 1 The town of Barrington from the bus window. Train north out of NYC to Albany   One of the stops along the Montreal- NYC train route that I would have stopped at for Night 2. Night 1 would have been west port. I took the train north from NYC to get into Albany around midnight. I bivied outside a church to get an early start to the following day. With the amount of homelessness around I don't think anyone batted an eye. But also not the safest option which I didn't realize until exploring on a holiday the following day.    Albany    Walking into the city from the train station on the other side of the Hudson Downtown Albany   Washington Avenue World War 2 memorial  Groceries for the next 4 days of hiking plus a isoputane fuel cannister  New york Capital. Normally this city would be busy with lawyers and politicians but today it was a ghost town Tulip Festival with the Dutch history in this area Modern Plaza Archives and Armory
