Hiking Across Jordan (part 1)

The 'Jordan Trail' is a hiking footpath that traverses the country north to south. The northern terminus starts at Um Qais which is a village near the borders with Syria and Israel. The route is 650 kilometres to connect with the Red Sea. I hiked southbound over 22 days in October 2019.  Hopefully this trip report helps plan or inspire a long distance hiking trip. I nformation and pictures from the northern half of the country (the first 11 days) are found on this page. Then i f you can tolerate more of my bad jokes and poor photography skills I'll post a link to the next page which includes the southern half. I broke up this blog post into 2 parts to speed up loading times with all the photos.  Here is the link for part 2 if you want to  🐻  with me for the entire journey! https://www.ascendandwander.ca/2019/09/thru-hiking-jordan-trail-part-2.html The GPX track across Jordan Day 1   We took a bus from Amman early in the morning and st...

Skiing the Coleman Glacier on Mount Baker in June

Image
We took the Coleman Glacier route and was able to drive to the trailhead in mid June 2025 then hike with skis for a few kilometres before skinning off the summer trail that extends to the viewpoint.  See GPS link here Driving to Heliotrope Ridge Trailhead   Kulshon Creek Hogsback campsite We transitioned at these rocks Skinning up from here. Further along the trail would have brought us further away from the Coleman Demming route anyway Harrison Camp Tent city on this Saturday morning. There were several guided groups out here also.  Not much visibility for most of the day. Taking a GPS coordinates of a massive crevasse . Apparently 1 person in the group before us had descended down towards it and 1 person fell inside and got lucky they were able to get out uninjured.  Creek beneath the slab Climbers roped up Some visibility opening up at our turnaround spot Zooming into the route Black Buttes range Skiing down the Coleman Glacier Chilling in mashed potatoes H...

Spring Skiing on Cypress

Image
You can't ski right from the parking lot like I was able to do a few weeks ago  I really like how the resort and BC Parks seem to leave you alone and let you ski these runs after the resort closes. The Whistler staff can be jerks sometimes. I get that it is private property but also little harm not always a foul... I was surprised to see them snow plowing a route up the mountain. Seems like lots of work instead of just waiting a few weeks for the snow to melt. Not sure how much Cypress does in the summer for operations Top of Strachan Some route finding on the way down to avoid the brush And some wipeouts and slides onto dry ground Skiing under Sky Chair It got rocky near the bottom so best to transition early. I remember a similar thing earlier in the season on the Roe Creek FSR Photos from May 6 2025 Watershed Boundary Appears like some nice tree skiing on the run down from the top of Sky chair and skiers right Black Mountain roasting in the sun

Coquitlam Mountain Biking

Image
This page is going to have the places I have been on a mountain bike around Coquitlam. So far I have just made it to Burke. I was impressed with the quality and ease of difficulty compared to Fromme and Seymour. It is a far superior place to start if you are a beginner or just wanting a chill ride. The mid mountain zone seems to be the best with a short ride up in about 15 minutes and you can easily lap it. I have been doing this before work so I can easily get across the bridge before traffic and have to time to chill before the night shifts.  From the end at Frank's trail on Burke Mountain View of the lower parking lot. Best to stage instead of driving up higher and on the dirt roads.

Squamish Mountain Biking

Image
This page is going to be a quick summary of the mountain bikes routes around Squamish starting April 2025. I have been doing sessions of only about 2 hours and enjoying the trips out there exploring new terrain. Some of the trails are the classics which I am sure I will get more familiar with while others I am content just riding once. This morning I spent a while on trailforks adding multiple routes to my list. I am still very new to this sport and can ride blues with confidence and a select blacks (barely). I had a few over the bar falls and oh boy is this a dangerous sport. I enjoy finding flow and exploring new areas instead of tech and jumps.  Chilling at a bench. A good and long first spot to break from the parking lot.  On the climb trail near the start of Full Nelson Half Nelson is one of the classic trails at Diamond Head. Nice flow. A central hub where a few trails merge View of the Cheekeye River valley area with Cat Lake further right. At the start to Mad Ha...

Red Mountain Trail near St George Utah

Image
There is a nice trailhead off highway 18 to the north of St George and one of the maps did show a complete route North south ending at the small city of Ivins. I would want to see if possible by day tripping the southern side since the topography on Gaia doesn't make the route feasible but I ran into a group of 3 older folks who said they have heard of it being done before.  GPS Red Mountain Trailhead Desert snakes freak me out every time  The top of the rim where the trail continues south to Ivins Peering through the wilderness area and West Canyon Road  Wilderness area boundary

Cottonwood Trail in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area

Image
This trailhead is maybe 20 minutes outside of St George Utah and I just parked in a grocery store lot ten walked to the official trailhead. This area is also frequented by mountain bikers but they probably stay away from the washes where I was hiking with Anna! <3 The empty and nice Cottonwood Trailhead  Terrain towards the junction of Cottonwood Creek Heath Wash  I met a cool guy who was mountain biking and sleeping out of his van. He had 2 bikes in there and a custom pull out drawer for internal storage with just the front wheel removed. Thanks again for the beer!
